Update
Post her battle with Michael and the result. Allegra kindly answered three questions regarding her journey to date, her feelings and her plans for the future.
What is the most important thing you have learned about yourself during this journey so far?
I’ve certainly learned a great deal about myself, music, and life during this experience. However, I think the most important thing I’ve learned is to let myself be vulnerable. For much of my life, I’ve always been fairly guarded/ had walls up due to past experiences and low points in my life. For the longest time, I didn’t want to let anyone in or let out my real emotions as I thought it would be “weak”. But this experience has helped teach me that in fact, being vulnerable is one of the strongest, most powerful things you can do. To be able to stand there on national television, with no walls up, being 1000% authentically you — that is real strength. I would have never been able to do that a year or two ago. This past year has been so monumental in my self discovery/ growth and being on the Voice has helped me with that in ways I can’t describe. The two songs I’ve performed on the show thus far, “Use Somebody” and “How Will I Know”, are both really vulnerable and emotional. I’m so grateful that I’ve gotten the chance to do these songs, that so deeply express who I am to the core of my being, on this platform. The Voice has allowed me to completely be myself, and share that with the world unapologetically.
What were your feelings at the time of the battle?
I was a little nervous before the battle, but not nearly as much as I was before my blind. And, differently from my blind, all my nerves subsided as soon as Michael and I began our performance. Having another person on stage, especially Michael who I’m really close to, made all the difference for both of us in how comfortable we felt. Having each other for support during the song, and singing to/ with each other as well as playing off one another calmed both of our nerves and made it so fun as well. During the song, there were really no thoughts in my mind about “battling” or “out singing” Michael. There never has been. We literally just had a blast the entire song, getting to sing and connect with each other, especially playing on specific musical moments that brought us together and grounded us even more. Michael is one of my favorite people I’ve ever gotten to sing with. Further, throughout the battles process, we both had the mentality that whatever happens, happens, and we were just grateful to be singing together and having fun doing it. So even after the battle, waiting to hear the results, I wasn’t nervous at all, because regardless of the news we were about to hear, we both were super happy with the arrangement and performance we had just delivered.
Where do you want to be both musically and personally in 12 months and or two years from now?
In a year, I want to be doing music completely full time. I want to have at least an EP out, if not two, or possibly an album. I also want to continue performing and gigging regularly, but begin playing bigger venues and festivals. I also would like to open for an artist/ band on their tour, and eventually tour myself as well. My biggest goals are, 1: to consistently release my original music — really get it out there so people can hear it; 2: to tour and travel around the world with my music — in any facet. I want to connect with people and bring people together all around the world. Music is the most universal language, so I want to utilize that to hopefully make the world a better place.
Thank you to Allegra for her time and responses. Special thanks to Kristen for connecting us! Please support Allegra and her career.
