It seems the save is simply an input for viewers by production to maintain some audience connectivity. Overall one choice will likely not change the outcome for this season.

The schedule may not end up being the biggest issue. LA County just issued a new stay at home order that takes effect Monday. It’s not clear that they can even film if the number of people required exceeds the gathering limits.

12/03/2020 (08:00PM – 09:00PM) (Thursday) : In the live results show, four artists, one from each team, will be revealed as safe by America’s votes. Each Coach then selects an additional artist to move forward. The artist with the next highest overnight votes from each team will compete in the Wildcard Instant Save for the last spot in the Top 9.
Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani star as the celebrity panel of coaches and Carson Daly (“TODAY Show”) hosts.
Some comments I read in a forum
Maybe the top 17 all prepare a song for the week after. They use Tuesday and Wednesday to rehearse next week song. On Thursday they get to know who advanced. Perform wildcard instant save. The the one who lost just go home the rest continue. A big mess.
I remembered they pre-taped the Semifinals of Season 16. But the results and instant save were done live to announce the finalists.
If that’s the case for Season 19, it will really be a mess since the artists will have a hard time preparing for the next round because of limited time.
